Ghent is a sought-after tourist destination. The creators of the renowned travel guide Lonely Planet seem to agree.
Every year, they compile a list of ten must-see regions, countries and cities. This top ten is published in the “Best in Travel” guide.
In the 2011 edition, Ghent ranks seventh in the list of must-see cities. This was the first time the city was included, and it is one of the smallest cities in the list.
Lonely Planet describes Ghent as Europe’s best-kept secret. Tourists generally visit Brussels, Bruges and Antwerp, but do not to schedule a stop-over in Ghent. The city was included in the list thanks to its beautiful historic centre, its fame as a festival city and its large student population.
